July 30, 2024 The difference between bridge, switch, and industrial router

In the complex ecosystem of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), bridges, switches, and industrial routers play indispensable roles as the core devices that connect the physical world and the digital world. However, for many practitioners in traditional industries, the differences between these devices may not be very clear.

1、 Bridge: The bridge of a local area network

Bridge, as one of the earliest network connection devices, its main function is to connect two or more local area networks (LANs) so that they can communicate with each other. The brdge works at the second layer of the OSI reference model, the data link layer, and forwards data frames by learning and maintaining the MAC address table. Unlike hubs, bridges can intelligently identify the destination address of data frames and only forward them to the target network segment, effectively reducing broadcast traffic in the network and improving network efficiency.
However, the limitation of a bridge is that it typically only has two ports, which limits its ability to connect multiple networks. In addition, bridges are unable to handle communication between different subnets, which limits their application in a wider range of network environments.

2、 Switch: Optimizer within LAN

Switches are upgraded versions of bridges, providing more efficient and flexible data forwarding capabilities at the data link layer. Switches can connect multiple ports simultaneously, support more device access, and optimize the forwarding path of data frames by learning the MAC address table. Compared with bridges, switches have higher transmission speeds and lower latency, which can significantly improve the communication efficiency within the local area network.
Switches not only support basic frame forwarding functions, but also have advanced features such as VLAN virtual LAN partitioning, port security, and traffic control. These functions enable switches to better adapt to complex network environments and provide stable and reliable data transmission channels for industrial IoT.

3、 Industrial router: an intelligent navigator between networks

Industrial routers go further by working at the third layer of the OSI reference model, which is the network layer. The main function of industrial routers is to forward data packets and select paths between different networks, enabling communication across subnets, wide area networks (WAN), and even the Internet. Industrial routers determine the optimal path through IP addresses and implement reliable data transmission based on network protocols such as TCP/IP.
Compared to switches and bridges, industrial routers have stronger processing capabilities and a richer feature set. It can not only achieve basic routing functions, but also support various security and management functions such as network address translation (NAT), firewall, VPN virtual private network, etc. These features make industrial routers an indispensable security barrier and intelligent navigator in the industrial Internet of Things.
Bridges, switches, and industrial routers each play different roles in the industrial Internet of Things. As a bridge of the local area network, the bridge realizes the basic function of forwarding data frames; The switch further optimizes the communication efficiency within the local area network and provides more advanced network management functions; Industrial routers serve as intelligent navigators between networks, enabling cross network data transmission and security protection.
From a functional perspective, the functions of a bridge are relatively simple and limited, mainly suitable for small-scale network environments; Switches are more suitable for LAN environments that require efficient and reliable data transmission; Industrial routers, with their powerful processing capabilities and rich feature sets, have become key devices in the industrial Internet of Things to connect different networks and achieve intelligent communication.
Therefore, when selecting these devices, we need to comprehensively consider the specific network environment and application requirements to ensure the efficient, stable, and secure operation of the network.
