January 16, 2025 Troubleshooting techniques for industrial routers in industrial networking

In the field of industrial networking, the stability and reliability of industrial routers are crucial. Once the router fails, it may lead to the paralysis of the entire network system, affecting production efficiency and data security. Therefore, mastering the fault diagnosis and troubleshooting skills of industrial routers is of great significance for maintaining the stable operation of network systems.

1. Preliminary diagnosis

● Check the status of the indicator light:
  • Green constant light: indicates that the network connection is normal.
  • Green flashing: indicates that data is being transmitted.
  • Flashing red: indicates a fault or problem.

By observing the status of the router's indicator lights, you can quickly locate the approximate scope of the problem.

● Check the power supply and voltage:
Ensure that the power adapter and power cord of the router are well connected and the power supply is stable.
Check whether the voltage is lower than the minimum voltage supported by the router, which is usually above 6V.

● Check network connection:
Make sure the connection between the router and the Internet is unobstructed.
Check whether the connection between the router and the computer or other devices is stable.

2. In-depth investigation

● SIM card check:

Ensure that the SIM card is not expired, has sufficient balance, and is not locked by the operator.
Check whether the SIM card is correctly installed in the router and whether there is any damage caused by unplugging or plugging without power.
Try inserting the SIM card into a phone or other device to check if the connection still drops.

● Antenna inspection:

Check whether the 4G/5G antenna is connected correctly and whether it is damaged.
If the signal strength is only one or two bars, it indicates that the signal is weak. You can try moving the router location or adding an external antenna to enhance the signal.

● Network configuration check:

Log in to the router's configuration page and check the system status and network mode.
Make sure the network mode is set to 4G/5G Internet access mode.
Check whether the IP address, subnet mask, gateway and other parameters are set correctly to avoid conflicts with other devices.

● Firmware version check:

Check the router firmware version to see if there are known bugs that cause disconnections.
Try updating to the latest version to fix possible firmware issues.

● Log analysis:

Log in to the router configuration page to obtain information such as system status and system logs.
Refresh the system log multiple times to get as much log information as possible, which is helpful for troubleshooting and analyzing problems.

3. Troubleshooting

● Restart the router:

Try restarting the router to release the cache and optimize the network environment.

● Reset the router:

If the problem persists, you can try resetting the router to factory settings and then reconfigure the network parameters.

● Replace hardware:

If the problem still cannot be solved after the above steps, it may be due to a hardware failure in the router. At this time, it is necessary to replace the router or related hardware components.

● Contact the operator:

If the issue may be related to the operator's network, you can contact the operator for assistance and support.

4. Preventive measures

● Regular maintenance:

Regularly maintain and inspect the router, including cleaning and heat dissipation.

● Backup configuration:

Regularly backup the router's configuration information to facilitate quick recovery in case of problems.

● Update firmware:

Regularly check and update the firmware version of the router to ensure the security and stability of the router.

● Network security:

Set a password with high complexity, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Change passwords regularly to ensure network security.
The fault diagnosis and troubleshooting of industrial routers require comprehensive consideration of multiple aspects, including indicator light status, power and voltage, network connectivity, SIM card, antenna, network configuration, firmware version, and log analysis. Through scientific troubleshooting methods and preventive measures, the stability and reliability of industrial routers can be effectively improved to ensure the normal operation of industrial IoT systems.
